Fearless? Not Me, Not Yet, But Getting There!

I am preaching through a series of material from Max Lucado based off of his latest book Fearless. It’s good stuff and comes at a good time.

As much as I need to be, I am not fearless. I fear much.

  •  I fear those who seem to want to control or be in control of things at church. I fear because it’s not about me and it shouldn’t be about them. I fear because I have see the damage in my own life and the lives of others when power plays are made…

  • I fear not being healthy and consequently not being there for my children. (working hard on this one!!!)

  • I fear things being done by our government… (I refuse to allow US politics into our conversation at church–we are too diversified to be divided in that arena, but hey, this is my blog and I can be fearful of what I see coming out of Washington if I want to.)

  • I fear for the well-being of our second son, Cole. He is going downhill in a stunningly fast fashion–life has become terribly complicated and difficult for him–we covet your prayers on his behalf and ours as we face an unknown future…

  • I fear at times that my ministry is not of much value… (Satan likes for me to dwell on that one, but I am pushing back hard!)

And when it comes down to it, some of my fears (pardon the pun, but I am afraid the list above is but a tip of the iceberg) are simply my response to issues I cannot control. Some of my fears are nothing more than a conscious or unconscious decision not trust God. And that’s slightly funny in a sad sort of way… it can’t get much crazier than a guy deciding to trust himself instead of trusting God.Maybe you find yourself in some of the above.

Maybe not.

Where ever you are, I hope you’ll appreciate Paul’s words to Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:7, For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Fearless? Not yet, but I hope to get there…

What are you afraid of?
