Happy, Scared, and Sad

Today has been a strange day.

It has been a day in which I have experienced the three main words in my title above.

I am so very happy that we now have–today–three new elders at the Orange Grove church.

I am so very scared because I am one of them.

So where does the sad come in? Well it really has nothing to do with the Orange Grove church.

At the start of my spring semester during my first year in college, I met the man who would become one of my closest friends. At age 45, we have now been the best of friends for over half our lives. For twenty-seven years John Dobbs has been a constant in my life. For the last ten plus years we have worked together here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The close proximity has been a tremendous blessing.

So why am I sad? John has been blessed with a great new opportunity–a new work in a new place–the Forsythe Ave church in Monroe, LA. He begins work there in February.

We will still be friends. We will still talk a couple of times each week. We will still laugh and commiserate with one another. We’ll just have to do it at a much greater distance. Instead of thirty minutes away, he’ll be more like four hours and thirty minutes.

So while I am saddened at the miles that will now be between us, I am so happy for his new adventure in the Kingdom. He deserves it!

God is good. And I pray all the good blessings possible for my friend.

Love ya John. See you Thursday for lunch!

How's It Shakin' Bacon?

Imagine burger grease, mayo, and ketchup all smeared across my face with a contented smile to go along with it.

Right now I could eat the biggest burger known to man.

And I’d like to do so while being a complete pig about it.

I didn’t mention the humongous whopping plate of cheese fries to go along with it, did I?

Yes, them too.

Instead, I just ate an apple. For breakfast I ate a half a cup of grapes.

I don’t know if I am really hungry or just longing after something more fun/ satisfying to sink my teeth in.

Some who might possibly once in a billion years stumble across this blog might just wonder why I don’t jump in the truck and head on over to Sonic.

Or Burger King.

Or Wendy’s.

Or even Mickey D’s.

The rest of you know I weigh more than I ever have and you recognize the glazed eyes of one who is on a diet.

Sigh.

As of today I have lost 5.5 pounds. It is a long row to hoe ahead of me.

This big boy didn’t get built in a day and he sure won’t lose it all anytime soon. So in the meantime, it is back to fruit, grits, and progresso light soup. And fat free crackers too.

I can think of two spiritual applications immediately.

1) Why don’t we long for God like we do a good burger? Or steak? Or whatever floats our boat?

2) I wonder how many of us have been on spiritual diets from God?

Blessings on your day–eat a big ‘un for me!

Keep On Smilin'

For the three semi-regular readers who are ragging me to post again…

In 1974, Wet Willie sang:

Well you say you’ve got the blues
You’ve got holes in both your shoes, yeah
You’re feeling alone and confused
You got to keep on smilin’
Just keep on smilin’

The song is all about smiling through the rain and pain of life.

From that perspective, meet Lucas Kincke.

Lucas is completely wheel chair bound and non-vocal. He is able to move his head to some degree, but ultimately his disabilities keep him from doing what the vast majority of us take for granted.

I met Lucas through my son Cole and Tops Soccer. Tops Soccer is a soccer league for kids with disabilities. Cole is playing and he and Lucas are teammates. Unfortunately they ended up with a goober of a coach. Yours truly.

A Tops Soccer game is an amazing thing. Each player has an assistant or in Lucas’ case someone to push his wheelchair.

We play on a shortened field and the game play itself is often chaotic, but it is soccer. Furthermore, on the faces of Cole and Lucas and everybody else on the field, it is pure joy.

So keep on smilin’ Lucas.

With every grin you teach me powerful lessons.

With every smile I am reminded that there are some things more important than the modern context of our modern lives.

Keep on smilin’ Lucas. Keep on smilin’…
